Students in grades 6 to 12 are invited to join WellSpan physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who live and work right here in South Central Pennsylvania for our second annual youth summit event – a free, fun day of education, networking and healthcare career exploration. Breakfast, lunch and campus tours will be provided.

Students will have an opportunity to participate in six hands-on, simulated activities, including:

  • Building an artificial heart.
  • Performing life-saving techniques during cardiac arrest.
  • Stopping bleeding from a wound.
  • Learning how to perform hands-only CPR.
  • Using ultrasound to look at the heart and internal organs.
  • Assessing four vital signs (breathing, blood pressure, pulse/heart rate, temperature).

The interactive, hands-on activities are designed to showcase the numerous career possibilities within healthcare and encourage students to consider a career in healthcare by introducing them to the practical aspects of healthcare professions and real people who look just like them.

This year’s keynote speaker is Damien Myers, MD, MPH, who left clinical medicine in 2010 to teach and cultivate the next generation of Black health professionals. In the process he founded MedReimagined, a Baltimore-based program aimed at inspiring the minds of young people through his own experiences and empowering students to consider becoming physicians. “For more than a decade, I’ve taught hundreds of aspiring medical professionals and a half dozen MDs. But we need a better way. There are 55,000 missing Black doctors.”

Parents, teachers and other adult attendees will have a learning track as well, plus, an opportunity to obtain expert financial advice and support for college tuition for your student(s).  Students of all genders and races – especially Black male, female, and non-binary youth, are welcome. WellSpan’s Black Men In White Coats Youth Summit is sponsored by WellSpan York Health Foundation Kids First Committee, Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society Health Diversity Task Force and York College of Pennsylvania.
