As a nonprofit health system, we're committed to providing care regardless of your ability to pay. Our financial assistance program offers partial to full discounts on WellSpan-provided services, depending on your eligibility level. Eligibility is based on a review of your household income and assets — including asset limits — measured against federal poverty guidelines updated each year. As a general benchmark, some nonprofit hospitals offer full charity care for households at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, with sliding-scale discounts extending to higher income levels — but exact thresholds and asset limits vary by hospital and program. We encourage you to apply even if you're unsure whether you qualify. Before applying, you'll need to prescreen for Pennsylvania's Medical Assistance (Medicaid) program. You may be asked to provide documentation such as tax returns or pay stubs as part of the review. To get started, call our patient financial services team at 717-851-5051 (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m.) or complete a Financial Assistance Application, available in English, Spanish and Haitian Creole.

After your insurance processes a claim, your remaining balance typically reflects your plan's cost-sharing requirements — such as copays, deductibles or coinsurance. These are amounts your insurance plan requires you to pay based on your specific coverage. It's common to receive separate bills because hospitals and physicians often bill independently for their services. The hospital bill covers facility-related costs — such as the room, equipment, nursing care and supplies. Physician bills cover the professional services your doctors provided during your visit. A Good Faith Estimate is a written breakdown of the total expected costs for a scheduled medical service — including related expenses like tests, prescription drugs, equipment and hospital fees. Under federal law, uninsured and self-pay patients — including those who choose not to use their insurance — are entitled to receive one. Timing matters: if you schedule at least 3 business days in advance, you'll receive your estimate within 1 business day. This is an important distinction that can affect your out-of-pocket costs. Generally, inpatient admission means you've been formally admitted to the hospital, which is typically covered under Medicare Part A (hospital services). Observation status means you're receiving care in the hospital but haven't been formally admitted— these services are billed under Medicare Part B (outpatient/medical insurance), which often results in higher out-of-pocket costs such as copays for each service. Your status is generally determined by the two-midnight rule: if your doctor expects you to need hospital care spanning at least two midnights, you're typically admitted as an inpatient. If you disagree with your status, you have the right to appeal. Coverage specifics depend on your enrollment, location and plan details. With a traditional insurance plan, your insurer negotiates rates directly with healthcare facilities in its network. Reference-based pricing works differently — your employer's health plan sets its own reimbursement rates rather than contracting with specific hospitals or providers. This means your plan may not cover the full cost of services, and you could be responsible for the difference. If you have a reference-based plan, we encourage you to verify your coverage status with your insurance provider before your visit. We understand that medical bills can feel overwhelming, and we're here to help you find a path forward. You may qualify for our financial assistance program, which offers partial to full discounts based on your income and assets. If a balance remains unpaid after all assistance and payment options have been explored, it may eventually be referred to a collections agency. However, we will not pursue collections while a financial assistance application is under review, and under recent federal rules, paid medical debt is removed from credit reports, and unpaid medical debt under $500 or less than one year old generally cannot be reported to credit bureaus. Under the federal No Surprises Act, you're protected from unexpected balance bills in key situations. If you receive emergency care from an out-of-network provider, you can only be charged in-network cost-sharing rates. The same protection applies when out-of-network providers— such as anesthesiologists, radiologists, or pathologists— treat you at an in-network facility. Your health plan must cover these services without prior authorization, and out-of-network payments count toward your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. You can't be asked to waive these protections. Note that ground ambulance services are not currently covered under the No Surprises Act.
