At WellSpan Health, we want every patient to feel welcomed, respected, and cared for from the very first interaction. That starts with helping you understand how your insurance works with our services so you can make choices that support what matters most to you.
Most insurance plans offer in network access to WellSpan. However, some plans - especially those that use “reference based pricing” or “unilateral repricing” - do not have a contract with WellSpan. We want to be clear and transparent, so you’re never left guessing.
These types of plans work differently. Instead of partnering with health systems to agree on coverage rates, they decide on their own how much they will pay for care you receive at WellSpan. Sometimes they pay less than the actual cost of the services. When that happens, the remaining balance may be billed directly to the patient, which can create confusion and frustration — something we work hard to prevent.
Because these plans do not offer in network benefits, WellSpan will register you as a self pay patient. You will receive our discounted self pay rate, and payment will be required in advance when scheduling care under these policies. We share this information upfront to ensure clarity, build trust, and support your ability to make informed decisions about your care.
