That’s why our mobile mammography unit has been hitting the road since 2021, bringing vital screenings directly into neighborhoods across our communities.
“This innovative initiative is more than just a vehicle; it’s a lifeline,” said Stacey Rife, manager of imaging operations at WellSpan York Hospital. “By eliminating barriers like transportation, time constraints and geographic limitations, the mobile unit makes it easier for women to prioritize their health. Whether parked outside a community center, church, a business or local event, the unit offers a convenient and welcoming space for mammograms with no hospital visit required.”
Since launching in September 2021 in partnership with Capital Blue Cross, the program has screened more than 4,600 women. Last year alone, 1,432 individuals received mammograms through the mobile unit. And the impact? Nearly 40 people have received confirmation of an early breast cancer diagnosis to date. Thanks to this tool for increased access and early detection, these patients were referred to providers quickly, giving them a better chance at successful treatment and cure.
The mobile mammography unit is more than a medical service, it’s a symbol of our commitment to health equity. By meeting people where they are, we’re helping to close gaps in care and ensure that every woman, regardless of her circumstances, has access to potentially life-saving screenings.
When it comes to breast cancer, every mile matters and every mammogram could be the one that helps save a life.
