Expert Care for Your Child’s Brain, Spine, and NervessubHeadH2 accessibility
The highly trained pediatric neurologists at WellSpan provide customized care for the full range of neurological conditions for children from birth through age 18. Our pediatric neurology services diagnose and treat diseases or impaired function of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, muscles, autonomic nervous system, and blood vessels that relate to these structures. Our specialists practice in a patient- and family-friendly office with ample parking and easy accessibility.
We work hard to get to know each of our patients and their families, understanding not only their medical history and conditions but also the patient’s and family’s wishes and needs to be addressed in the child’s neurological care plan.
Our team does our best to be available to our patients and families at all times – not just when you come into the office for a scheduled appointment. We provide an academic medical center level of care and leading-edge therapies in a location close to home.
Our team also offers virtual appointments via secure videoconferencing for certain appointments. Telemedicine allows us to see you and your child more quickly and conveniently. We offer expanded times for appointments. We are actively expanding our telemedicine program to additional locations.
At WellSpan, we take a team-based approach to your child’s care – not only within the neurology team but also in our close coordination of services with other WellSpan specialty pediatric providers. When your child needs additional care from other providers – such as genetics, sports medicine, feeding program, physical therapy, rehabilitation or behavioral health – we can seamlessly connect them with those WellSpan providers to help your child continue on the road to wellness. We also work closely with your child’s primary care pediatrician to keep them informed and involved each step of the way.
Conditions Treated
Common neurological disorders that our expert team treats include:
Our pediatric neurological team does not typically provide management for autism spectrum disorders, attentional problems such as attention deficient disorder (ADD) or attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or sleep disorders. We invite you to reach out to our WellSpan behavioral health team or multidisciplinary autism team for care for those conditions.
How We Can Help
Inpatient and Outpatient Neurology Care
Our expert team provides neurological care for children in both the inpatient hospital and outpatient office settings. Our inpatient services typically involve more intensive therapies – such as infusion for prolonged migraine – and close monitoring. Our neurologists see patients throughout the region, and we are proud to offer top-notch care for neurological conditions close to home.
Innovative Neurodiagnostics Lab
The WellSpan Neurodiagnostics Lab provides a wide range of diagnostic studies that enable our neurological team to properly and efficiently diagnose your child’s condition. We offer electromyography (EMG), electroencephalogram (EEG), long-term monitoring, and holistic neurodiagnostic studies. These services are an important component of our epilepsy and movement disorders programs.
Our fellowship-trained epileptologists provide leading-edge care for children with epilepsy and their families. Our full spectrum of services covers your child’s care from diagnosis in the hospital through ongoing care through our office locations and rehabilitation programs. Management techniques we offer include medication, ketogenic diet, surgical options, and drug trials for refractory epilepsy.
Neurodevelopment Clinic
After being discharged from our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), we continue to care for and support children and their families who face ongoing challenges related to a premature or complicated birth. We coordinate care with specialists across WellSpan, including nutrition and physical, occupational and speech therapy.
Life Stage Transitions
Our team is committed to helping your child with a neurological condition transition successfully into young adulthood. This transition includes moving to an adult neurologist, leaving the family home, and working. We work closely with the Epilepsy Association of Western and Central Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania patient-centered medical homes, and other community organizations to help young adults with neurological conditions live fulfilling lives.
If your child has experienced a complex brain injury due to a car accident, playground accident, concussion, or illness, you need advanced care. We have a neurologist in-house who focuses on brain injury management, and works to coordinate care with ophthalmology, occupational therapy, back-to-work programs, and other services.
Headache and Migraine Care
Our team coordinates care of headaches and migraines with your child’s primary care provider. Treatments we can offer include Botox injections, nerve blocks, medications, and lifestyle coaching. We have a dedicated headache nurse on-staff who specializes in care for these conditions.
We offer expert care and treatment for movement disorders, including Parkinson’s disease. Treatment options we offer include infusions and medications. We focus on improving your quality of life, connecting you and your family with support groups, and getting you started with an appropriate exercise and/or rehabilitation program.
