Autism and Developmental Disabilities

Nurturing abilities and embracing differences

Autism and Developmental Disabilities

When a child isn’t meeting milestones the way you expected, it can bring worry and questions. You might wonder if what you’re seeing is part of typical development or something more. Many families begin searching online, talking with their child’s doctor or reaching out to schools for guidance.

WellSpan is here to support you through every step — from early concerns to diagnosis and ongoing care.

What are autism and developmental disabilities?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental disabilities affect how a child learns, communicates, behaves and interacts with the world. These conditions are common, and they can look different in every child.

Families often notice:

  • Delays in speech or language
  • Differences in social interaction or play
  • Sensory sensitivities
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Challenges with transitions or routines

Early identification can make a meaningful difference in a child’s long‑term development. If you’re unsure whether something you’re seeing is typical, it’s always okay to ask for help.

Why early evaluation matters

Starting supportive services early can help a child gain skills, confidence and independence. It can also give families the tools they need to understand and respond to their child’s strengths and challenges.

WellSpan offers:

  • Developmental evaluations

  • Guidance for families

  • Behavioral and therapeutic supportCoordination with pediatricians, schools and community programs

Our goal is to make the path forward clearer and to make care accessible closer to home.

How we support children and families

Children with autism and developmental disabilities may receive care through different WellSpan services depending on their needs. This may include:

  • Developmental pediatrics
  • Behavioral health services
  • Occupational, physical or speech therapy
  • Family education and support
  • Coordination with community and school-based resources

Many families receive comprehensive evaluation and long-term support through the WellSpan Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities (CADD), our dedicated program for children and teens with developmental and behavioral needs. CADD offers diagnostic services, therapy, care coordination and family guidance in one coordinated setting.

What care looks like

Evaluation and diagnosis
A detailed assessment helps families understand what their child is experiencing and what supports may help.

Therapy & treatment
Services may include behavior therapy, developmental therapy, speech-language support or occupational therapy.

Family support
Parents and caregivers receive guidance, education and strategies to support progress at home and at school.

Ongoing coordination
Care teams help families navigate the healthcare system, connect with community programs and adjust supports as needs change.
