The nuclear medicine technologist uses radioactive materials to diagnose and treat disease. The technologist utilizes gamma cameras, uptake probes, and other specialized equipment to obtain information about the structure and function of virtually every major organ system of the body.
Salary
Most nuclear medicine technologists are employed in the hospital setting. Salaries average $45,000 per year depending on the employer and geographic location.
Students enrolled in the Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Students failing to maintain a 2.0 grade point average or failing to meet the academic requirements of each program are subject to academic or clinical disciplinary action, suspension or dismissal from the college. Specific guidelines for academic progress requirements are found in the college’s student handbook.
Each student’s performance in the classroom and in the lab/clinical area is evaluated on a regular basis by the faculty. Grade reports are sent to students at the end of each semester. Credit hours are calculated by the following formula:
16 weeks per semester
15 lecture hours per semester = 1 credit hour
60 lab/clinical hours per semester = 1 credit hour

Earned credits ten years old or less in the following courses may be submitted for review: anatomy and physiology and microbiology. Credits earned in computer science courses three years old or less may be submitted for review. All other courses will be reviewed regardless of age. Transfer credit for major specific courses will be reviewed by the appropriate course faculty.
Applicants must have completed college-level courses in human anatomy and physiology, physics, chemistry, math, statistics, and oral and written communications. Students are required to achieve a cumulative grade point average of 2.3 or greater. Students enrolled in the Nuclear Medicine Technology Program at Harrisburg Area Community College, Millersville University of Pennsylvania or York College of Pennsylvania have the first opportunity to enroll in the program.

Students applying for admission to the LGCNHS Nuclear Medicine Program at WellSpan York Hospital must meet the following requirements:
- High school diploma. All applicants must have graduated from an approved secondary school or have met the requirements for the GED issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Home-schooled students must have diploma from the Pennsylvania Home School Accreditation Association or have met requirements for the GED. High school courses should include a minimum of 16 units as follows:

Post-secondary college-level equivalents will be considered to fulfill the above high school requirements.
- Satisfactory achievement on the Scholastic Aptitude Test administered by the College Entrance Examination Board or ACT Assessment Program administered by the American College Testing Program. These exams are not required if more than five (5) years have elapsed since either high school graduation or GED, or when applying to the Nuclear Medicine or Medical Technology Programs. Arrangements for taking the SAT or ACT examinations are made through the high school guidance office or by writing directly to the respective test organization.
- Three recommendations from teachers, guidance counselors, college advisors or instructors, employers or others.
- Those candidates whose credentials meet initial requirements will be scheduled for an interview. Issues and topics discussed in the interview include: advisement regarding employment, study skills, transportation requirements and criminal history information requirement.
Application Deadline
Applications should be received by January 15. Classes begin in the Fall semester.
Applications received after January 15 will be considered if space is available. Otherwise, the application will be considered for the following year.

Applicants will be advised of their status by letter.

The tuition rate is determined by the administration of the Lancaster General College of Nursing and Health Sciences and is subject to change at any time. Please call the admission office at LGCNHS for current fees and expenses.
