Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare?:
As a child and young adult, I witnessed the significant impact of physicians and nurses on the lives of my loved ones and family. I was also fascinated with the biological sciences, especially physiology and anatomy. Later in my career as a resident physician, I became interested in gynecologic oncology because of my interest in complex surgeries and observing the significant impact of this specialty on the lives of women diagnosed with cancer.
What I want my patients to know about me?:
For the last two decades, I have devoted my career to caring for women with cancers of the uterus, ovaries, cervix, vulva and non-cancer complex gynecologic diseases. My clinical interests and expertise include minimally invasive surgery with both robotic and conventional laparoscopy for gynecologic cancers. This technique reduces surgical scarring, pain and recovery time and improves quality of life after surgery. In addition, I have particular expertise in performing cytoreductive or debulking surgery for advanced ovarian cancer, removing as much visible cancer as possible and improving the chances of successful treatment and prolonged survival.
The innovative surgical techniques I use include robotic lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node biopsy for uterine and cervical cancers. This technique allows me to remove fewer lymph nodes and reduces the risk of complications. I also perform cancer risk-reducing surgeries and operations for cancer prevention in women with genetic predispositions such BRCA and other cancer mutations and Lynch syndrome. I counsel and treat women with strong family history for ovarian and uterine cancers. In my practice, I have implemented a series of guidelines and measures to improve recovery and minimize the complications from surgery. I utilize recent advances in targeted and personalized therapies for gynecologic cancers, targeting cancer cells at a molecular level and minimizing adverse side effects on healthy organs.
Board-certified in gynecologic oncology and fellowship trained in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, I am among few physicians in the United States who completed a formal minimally invasive surgery fellowship in addition to gynecologic oncology training. I value my patients’ individual needs and strive to offer outstanding care in a convenient, caring, and personalized manner. I had served as a Clinical Associate Professor at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, have a special interest in medical education and have taught gynecologic surgery and oncology to resident physicians and medical students.
I strongly believe in collaboration and teamwork to provide the best care possible to our patients. I am fortunate to work with a team of dedicated medical oncologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists, and nurses who are all committed to providing the highest level of care to women diagnosed with cancer.
What I do when I'm not seeing patients?:
When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, swimming, hiking and reading biographies and history.
