Accredited by the Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA), WellSpan York Hospital accepts one fellow per year into a one-year, intensive experience in orthopedic trauma.
This advanced, post-residency training prepares the successful candidate to take a leadership role in musculoskeletal trauma care and its integration with other specialties.
The training and objectives of the fellowship include:
Training
- focus on the care of the critically injured patient
- multidisciplinary approach
- adult trauma and fracture management
- subspecialty exposure to spine, hand and other trauma-related surgery
Objectives
- surgical and nonsurgical management of musculoskeletal injuries
- algorithmic decision-making in the timing and sequencing of multiple injury management
- postoperative and outpatient care, including directing rehabilitation
- understanding of the prophylaxis and/or treatment of the complications and sequelae of musculoskeletal injuries
- injury management decision-making based on age and/or comorbid medical problems in pediatric or geriatric populations
- familiarity with and understanding of the historical evolution of the methods available to treat musculoskeletal injuries
- use of advanced technology and instrumentation
- skill development in teaching and laboratory and clinical research related to orthopedic trauma
- ethical, economic and legal issues related to orthopedic trauma care
Education curriculum
The program provides an opportunity for you to learn in-depth aspects of orthopedic trauma care, including:
- interdisciplinary relationship among trauma team members from multiple specialties, including, but not limited to, trauma and critical care, anesthesia, neurosurgery, urology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation
- clinical and radiological musculoskeletal evaluation of the injured patient
- pathophysiology of the patient with multiple injuries, in addition to the associated vascular, neurological, urological, respiratory and metabolic disorders
- surgical and nonsurgical management of axial and appendicular musculoskeletal injuries
- principles of management of soft tissue injuries
- techniques for treating deep wound and bone infections, segmental bone loss, nonunions and malunions
- principles of post-traumatic reconstructive surgery, including joint and ligament replacement, augmentation, osteotomy and fusion techniques
- principles of biomechanics, biomaterials and bioengineering and how they relate to orthopedic traumatology
- biostatistics and experimental design
- ethical and legal aspects of orthopedic trauma care
- use of outcomes studies
- epidemiology, prevention and mitigation of injury
- Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS) certification
- completion of a research project with subsequent presentation to a group of peers
Requirements
- graduate of an allopathic or osteopathic school or college of medicine
- graduate of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)- or American Osteopathic Association (AOA)-accredited residency program
- eligibility for, or possession of, a Pennsylvania medical license and a medical training license
- board eligibility or certification in orthopedic surgery
Application
Per OTA fellowship guidelines, all applications must be processed through the San Francisco Match (SF Match). Our program follows the OTA Code of Conduct. The SF Match takes place in February of each year for the following year's academic year (i.e., the February 2021 match yields a fellow for the academic year 2022–23).
