What is Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS)?

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is a minimally invasive surgical option used by Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialists to diagnose and treat select conditions of the throat and voice box, including certain head and neck cancers. This approach allows surgeons to access the surgical site through the mouth.

How TORS works

Using advanced robotic technology, the surgeon guides specialized instruments and a high-definition camera through the mouth and throat to remove tumors or abnormal tissue in the throat or voice box. Enhanced visualization and precision may allow for careful removal of disease while helping to preserve important functions such as speech and swallowing.

When TORS may be an option

TORS at WellSpan may be considered for select patients with:

• Suspected cancers of the oropharynx (throat)
• Cancers of the throat (tonsils, base of the tongue) or upper voice box
• Certain noncancerous conditions affecting the throat, such as enlarged lingual tonsils

Potential benefits

For appropriately selected patients, TORS may:

• Eliminate the need for external incisions on the face to approach the throat or voice box
• Reduce impact on surrounding tissues
• Support a shorter recovery compared to traditional open surgery
• Help some patients avoid procedures such as tracheotomy
