WellSpan Health is proud to share that Roxanna Gapstur Ph.D., R.N., WellSpan Health president and chief executive officer, has been included in the 100 Most Influential People list of 2023 presented by Modern Healthcare, a national industry leader in the healthcare news and information community. The recognition honors individuals in health care who are deemed by their peers and the senior editors of Modern Healthcare to be the most influential individuals in the industry, in terms of leadership and impact. The publication specifically mentions her focus on innovative ways the health system is increasing access to care for the communities it serves, including a partnership with Emerus, a neighborhood-hospital operator, to build three neighborhood hospitals to expand in-patient care access.
Dr. Gapstur is known for building partnerships that incorporate groundbreaking technology with organizations such as General Catalyst, Helix and Truveta, among others. Under her leadership, WellSpan is driving patient outcomes and satisfaction to lead the region in value – while yielding strong financial performance.
"Roxanna understands that to be successful in this rapidly changing industry, we must reimagine health care solutions. She does that by inspiring her team to sustain our award-winning workplace culture, enhance patient experiences and integrate systems that deliver improved performance and outcomes," said Hilda Shirk, chair of the WellSpan Health board of directors. "Her leadership has been instrumental in guiding this health system on its value-based care journey."
In that commitment to value-based care, WellSpan's Medicare Accountable Care Organization (ACO) now cares for more than 51,000 patients and is the largest in South Central Pennsylvania. Under the leadership of Dr. Gapstur, the ACO achieved a quality score in the top 15% nationally in performance results for the 2022 Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) and leads the region in value.
With 22 years' experience as an oncology nurse, Dr. Gapstur also brings a clinical voice to healthcare leadership and an intimate knowledge of the care team and patient relationship. Her firsthand experience has led to championing efforts to improve processes to address care gaps, while sustaining a workplace culture and integrating systems that deliver improved performance and outcomes.
Additionally, Dr. Gapstur's leadership and commitment to equitable care and a culture of inclusivity resulted in the organization's first diversity, equity, and inclusion committee, which has increased belonging across the organization and the number of women in senior-level positions by 25%. Dr. Gapstur was also intentional about ensuring WellSpan remain a top healthcare employer regionally and nationally by increasing its minimum wage to $17 per hour earlier this year.
All of this, while the health system continues its non-profit, mission-focus, providing $344 million in community benefit just last year.
