Why I chose to pursue a career in medicine:
Becoming a physician was almost genetic. My father was a psychiatrist practicing his entire career in York, Pa. I thank God that he immigrated to the USA from Greece so that I would be an American. I am equally thankful he met my mom, whose parents also immigrated from Greece. My father was so gratified with his career, practicing until he was 80 years old. I knew his professional satisfaction stemmed from the good he did. I wanted the same for myself.
What I want my patients to know about me:
I was a psychiatric nurse's aide at WellSpan York Hospital from age 17 through college and med school summers. After my five-year surgical residency at WellSpan York Hospital, I moved to Chicago for two years to become a fellowship-trained cancer surgeon. As there were no other surgical oncologists in York, I wanted to return to give back to the medical community and hospital that launched my professional journey. I train surgical residents , and I teach medical students.
What I do when I'm not seeing patients:
I am of Spartan heritage. The Spartans believed in both a healthy mind and body. As an avid triathlete (swim, bike, run), I have qualified for age group nationals the last few years. I have challenged my WellSpan York Hospital surgical residents to competitions where they compete as a relay team and I compete as an individual. So far I am 3:0 (I get to train while I make the residents work late at the hospital). I am producing the next generation of doctors both literally and figuratively. My oldest son will soon be a medical school graduate, and my second son is applying to med school now.
