Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare:
Growing up I knew I wanted a career where I could help people and bring a smiles to all those around me. My exposure to the health care field at a young age in West Africa shed some light into my career path. I used to spend the summer with my aunt who was a family medicine doctor in rural area where there was a shortage of physicians and resources. Seeing the impact she made on her patients' lives inspired me to do the same when I grow up.
What I want my patients to know about me:
Working with kids is a gratifying endeavor. I love their honesty, innocence and interest in everything around them. Helping a sick child, calming his fears, reassuring parents or solving the mystery of a diagnosis is the most satisfying work I can imagine. Educating a patient at an early age on the principles of a healthy diet, the benefits of exercising and the value of good habits has the potential to start the individual off on the path to a healthier adulthood. I strongly embrace the idea that my role is not only to be a pediatrician, but also an advisor, advocate and educator.
What I do when I'm not seeing patients:
My 10-month-old daughter is the highlight of my life. I cannot wait to see her after a long, exhausting day. She gave me a new meaning to life and somehow shaped the way I practice medicine. I enjoy trying new food recipes, even though cooking is not my strongest suit. I also enjoy going to Zumba classes and taking a walk in the park.
