Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare:
As a high school and college student, I loved biology especially learning about how the body worked. During those years, I worked in the public library and listened to patrons’ stories about their interests, research, work and lives. A common and most important story was their concern about their health. So many of them commented that they wish their doctors took more time with them and listened more carefully. I decided to shift my career focus from the research bench to medical school. I found all areas of medicine so intriguing.
What I want my patients to know about me:
My mission as a physician is to provide exceptional, compassionate health care in the context of careful listening and close affiliation with my patients and families. My first job after residency was in a remote section of eastern Kentucky’s Appalachian coal fields. The patients there taught me the value of listening carefully to the stories they told as I gathered their histories and cared for them. These stories informed me about how to care best for my patients. They also helped me become a better physician and human being.
What I do when I'm not seeing patients:
My first love is my family and spending time with them is what I enjoy most. I consider myself very blessed with my wife and children. My wife and I are involved in several ministries at St. Joseph Church in East York. I serve as a catechist in the RCIA program and Lector at Mass on Sundays. We enjoy long walks together and try to get to the mountains and National Parks whenever we can. In my “spare time,” I enjoy fly fishing using the flies I craft at the tying bench.
