Getting You Back to the Activities You EnjoysubHeadH2 accessibility

Your shoulder is the most flexible joint in your body. It’s made up of an intricate grouping of muscles, bones and tendons that help you do many different daily activities - from throwing a fastball to picking up your grandchild.

Unfortunately, this flexibility also puts your shoulder at risk for injury. A number of things can go wrong in the shoulder, and it can dramatically impact your life. Problems can range from a dislocated shoulder to inflammation of the tendons in the shoulder to tears in the rotator cuff.

WellSpan Orthopedics physicians use the latest technologies to identify the cause of your shoulder pain. Then, working closely with you, your doctor will recommend a care plan designed to achieve your health goals.

If your treatment plan includes shoulder replacement surgery, you can count on us to put all of our resources toward your recovery. This includes your surgical team, as well as other doctors at WellSpan, community organizations, and other healthcare resources. We also consider your family and friends as an integral part of your care team.

With WellSpan's comprehensive support behind you, you have the best chance of beating shoulder pain and getting back to the life you love.

How We Can Help

Your doctor may discuss shoulder replacement surgery if your shoulder joints are severely damaged and if therapy, medication and lifestyle modification have not relieved pain.

During a shoulder replacement, your surgeon will cut away damaged bone and cartilage around your shoulder. The damaged bone and cartilage will be removed and replaced with an artificial joint.

Recovery from shoulder replacement surgery can vary based on the individual’s health prior to surgery, other medical conditions that may be present and one's commitment to rehab. Your doctor and team will work closely with you before your surgery so that you can know what to expect before, during and after your procedure.

Rehab and exercises are an important part of recovery. Your team will ask that you begin moving your arm soon after surgery. As you continue to recover, a therapist will begin working with you to help you regain and build strength. Learn more about rehabilitation at WellSpan.
