WellSpan Radiation Oncology - Maryland Proton Treatment Center

WellSpan patients undergoing cancer treatment have access to proton therapy performed by their WellSpan oncologists at the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC) at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. MPTC offers the most advanced form of proton therapy in the world―pencil beam scanning. This technique is highly effective for a wide variety of solid, localized tumors in adults and children. Since proton therapy delivers an increased dose that stops specifically at the tumor site, it protects much of the surrounding, normal tissue. It’s painless, non-invasive and well tolerated which often times leads to fewer side effects now and in the future.

Proton therapy to treat:

  • Brain tumors, including craniopharyngiomas, low-grade, high-grade and recurrent gliomas, meningiomas and pituitary adenomas
  • Tumors of the base of skull
  • Breast cancer
  • Gastrointestinal track tumors, including esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, rectal and anal canal tumors
  • Gynecologic tumors
  • Head and neck tumors, including throat cancer, thyroid cancer and oral cancers, among others
  • Lung tumors, including non-small cell and small cell cancers, malignant mesothelioma and thymomas
  • Prostate tumors
  • Pediatric cancers
  • Sarcoma
  • Spine tumors
  • Lymphomas, including Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's disease
  • Recurrent cancers
