WellSpan president & CEO tours facility converting hospital plastic waste into future building material

Ahead of celebrating Earth Day, Roxanna Gapstur Ph.D., R.N., WellSpan Health president & CEO and Laura Buczkowski, WellSpan Health executive vice president and chief financial officer, took a tour of the Center for Regenerative Design and Collaboration (CRDC USA) facility in York to see first-hand the innovative and proprietary process of converting hospital plastic waste into RESIN8, a concrete and asphalt additive made from mixed plastic waste.

WellSpan is partnering with CRDC USA, a building materials company that converts plastic waste into climate-resilient concrete additives, to continue building sustainable solutions. WellSpan has been delivering containers of plastic waste to the facility from WellSpan York Hospital, with plans to expand this pilot program to other WellSpan facilities across the health system as part of its sustainability initiatives. As the partnership grows, WellSpan plans to utilize the concrete and asphalt additives made from the plastic waste in the WellSpan York Hospital expansion project in York.

The sustainability partnership will improve the health of South Central Pennsylvanians by repurposing a broad scope of plastics, keeping them out of local landfills and the incinerator while also benefiting durable solutions in the construction industry.

For more about the pilot program and WellSpan's partnership with CRDC USA, listen to the latest episode of the Inspiring Health podcast as Gapstur welcomes guest Ross Gibby, CEO of CRDC USA.
