Learn how to prepare a heart-healthy garden salad with salmon, fresh berries and a Greek Goddess dressing at First Friday in York, Friday, May 7, where WellSpan Health will offer healthy cooking demonstrations to celebrate the opening of its new Heart & Vascular Center in York.

Want more heart-healthy dishes?

Try zoodles with pomodoro sauce, zucchini and shrimp from Presto Fast Italian, a salmon, avocado and kale grain bowl from Prince Street Café or one of a variety of chicken dishes with fresh vegetables and seasonings from Garden Gate Fine Foods, Tutoni’s, Neama’s Egyptian Food and Soulfood in the Park.

These are just some of the healthy dishes being served at 10 York restaurants participating in the first ever WellSpan Heart Healthy Dining Week from May 8 to 15. In partnership with Downtown Inc. and the York County Economic Alliance, each of these restaurants will feature a heart-healthy option on their menu during the week. Guests will have the option to take out, dine in or dine outdoors, all in adherence to the current CDC guidelines for social distancing and mask wearing.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of the first ever Heart Healthy Dining Week to highlight ways to maintain a heart healthy lifestyle and enjoy delicious food - whether you’re preparing a meal at home or dining out. The participating restaurants have outdone themselves with the menu offerings - so creative, full of flavor and good for you! And the demonstration kitchen at the WellSpan Heart & Vascular Center will show people how to create their own inspired meals at home and make healthy menu selections when dining out,” said Elaine Bonneau, Director of Downtown Inc., and affiliate of the York County Economic Alliance.

It’s all to mark the opening of the WellSpan Heart & Vascular Center, located next to the Apple Hill campus in York. The center provides patients with cutting-edge heart and vascular care as well as the tools and resources they need to live a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The $33 million, two-story center on South George Street houses WellSpan Cardiology, WellSpan Cardiac Surgery and WellSpan Vascular Surgery, as well as the WellSpan Heart Failure Program and non-invasive procedures such as echocardiograms, electrocardiograms and vascular ultrasound. The new center also will offer a cardiac rehabilitation program, housed in a roomy, bright gymnasium with large windows that look out on the campus.

In addition to providing care, the center features a demonstration kitchen for cooking classes supplied by fresh produce grown in a rooftop garden. Patients also can exercise on a rooftop track and on a walking trail that winds through the campus. They also can shop for fresh seasonal foods on the campus, at the J-Mar Farms stand on Monument Road, to the rear of the center. Produce from the stand will be featured in the demonstration kitchen and in meals served at the center’s Healthy Heart Café.

First Friday, May 7

Sandy Gladfelter, one of WellSpan’s health educators, will offer healthy cooking demonstrations from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Beaver Street.

“Come join me and learn how to prepare fresh foods into delicious dishes,” Gladfelter said. “Make it part of your everyday life. We want to walk beside you and support you on your journey to heart health. It starts in your kitchen!”
