Our PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program develops your specialty pharmaceutical care skills in medical, trauma, surgical, neuroscience, cardiac, open heart and emergency medicine populations.
The program emphasizes providing rational and cost-effective drug therapy in a community teaching hospital, through the provision of clinical pharmacy services in the ICU setting. Our goal is to provide opportunities for professional growth and the development of a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Critical Care.
Your preceptors will be experienced and dedicated practitioners who ensure competence, build confidence and instill responsibility for drug therapy outcomes in our most complex patients.
WellSpan York Hospital features a Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center and 60 adult intensive care unit beds including medical, trauma, surgical, neuroscience, cardiac and open heart.
You’ll gain experience through participation in interdisciplinary rounds with medical residents, surgical residents, EM residents and critical care attendings.
You’ll also:
- gain experience in our 44-bed Level III neonatal intensive care unit
- participate in interdisciplinary rounds with medical residents, surgical residents and critical care attendings to encourage your involvement with patient care activities
Accreditation
Our program has been accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) since its inception in 2001.
Purpose
Our PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program builds on your Doctor of Pharmacy Education and your PGY-1 pharmacy residency experience to develop specialized practice skills.
You’ll have opportunities to function independently as a practitioner, conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care.
After successfully completing our program, you’ll be prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, as well as board certification.
Graduates of our program are assertive, ethical professionals with a commitment to pharmaceutical care and the profession of pharmacy.
As one of our graduates, you’ll be:
- a skilled provider of pharmaceutical care
- skilled at monitoring and documenting impact on patient care in a critical care setting
- a content expert and educator of patients and healthcare professionals on drug-related topics
- a valued member of any healthcare team, who takes personal responsibility for achieving optimal patient outcomes
In addition to practicing in the critical care setting, you’ll also have the opportunity to provide educational programs to pharmacy staff and students, nurses and medical staff (residents, interns and students).
As a critical care resident, you’ll also serve as a role model and leader for PGY-1 pharmacy residents.
Successful completion
PGY-2 critical care pharmacy residents will be awarded a PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency certificate with successful completion of requirements in the following areas:
- achievement of ASHP designated competency areas:
- patient care
- advancing practice and improving patient care
- leadership
- management
- teaching
- professionalism
- licensure in Pennsylvania prior to starting your PGY-2
- staffing requirements
- patient care
- presentations and projects
- attendance and service
Rotation summary
Required:
- medical ICU (8 weeks)
- trauma/surgical ICU (8 weeks)
- infectious disease (4 weeks)
- emergency medicine (4 weeks)
- cardiovascular ICU (4 weeks)
- neuroscience ICU (4 weeks)
Required longitudinal rotations:
- drug information and teaching
- pharmacy practice administration and staffing (includes every fourth weekend and one 5-hour evening a week)
- Research (ASHP poster, Eastern States Conference and WellSpan Discovery Day)
Electives (in addition to any of the required rotations):
- neonatal ICU
- other medical subspecialties by special arrangement
