Description:
WellSpan Philhaven is pleased to offer QPR suicide prevention training to members of our community. QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. Three simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. With the Mental Health Awareness addition to the QPR, participants will briefly learn how to recognize some of the more common mental health signs and symptoms and how to response to someone who needs their support. For example, participants will recognize when someone might be having a panic attack and learn necessary skills to help in that event.
Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. QPR is a nationally certified program taught by certified trainers. Those completing the course will receive a certificate. The course focuses on training individuals to be "Gatekeepers" or someone in a position to recognize a crisis and the warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide. Gatekeepers can be anyone but include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide. This customizable 2 to 3 hour course is available to individuals and community groups at no charge as part of Philhaven's commitment to improving the mental health and resilience of our community.
