Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Redefining depression treatment

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)?

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment that uses magnetic fields to stimulate underactive areas of the brain associated with depression. It’s an excellent option for people who haven’t responded well to medications. It’s been safely administered in millions of treatment sessions worldwide.

TMS therapy is FDA approved and administered by licensed and certified professionals in an outpatient setting. WellSpan offers TMS at behavioral health outpatient clinics in Chambersburg, Ephrata, Mt. Gretna and York (Williams Road). TMS is covered by most major health insurances, including some Medicaid plans.

With TMS, long-term relief from depression is achievable. Many patients experience significant improvement or complete resolution of symptoms after four to six weeks of treatment.

WellSpan uses NeuroStar Advanced Therapy.

Who is a candidate for TMS therapy?

You may be a candidate for TMS therapy if you:

  • have been diagnosed with depression
  • have tried two or more antidepressant medications with unsatisfactory results or with multiple side effects
  • are 15 years of age or older
  • don't have any metal implants in your head or neck
  • don't have a history of seizures
  • don't have a current substance use disorder

Talk with you doctor to decide if TMS therapy is right for you.

What to expect during transcranial magnetic stimulation?

Before treatment

  • You'll attend a free information session before starting the program.

  • We'll help you determine your insurance's coverage.

  • Procedure appointments will be performed daily Monday through Friday over several weeks. Each appointment lasts about 20 minutes.

During treatment

  • You'll comfortably recline in the treatment chair.

  • A small, curved device containing a magnetic coil will be positioned lightly on your head.

  • The coil will deliver targeted magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of your brain.

  • You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head.
  • You’ll remain awake and alert during the treatment, with no sedation or anesthesia.

After treatment

  • You’ll be able to resume normal activities immediately.
  • There are no effects on alertness or memory, so you can drive yourself to and from treatment sessions.
  • You may experience mild to moderate pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site during the first week of treatment. It’s usually temporary.

  • Non-invasive and drug-free: No medication side effects mean no impact on alertness or memory.
  • Convenient and comfortable: Treatment sessions take as little as 20 minutes and are administered in the comfort of an outpatient clinic.
