Interventional Cardiology Services

From diagnosis to treatment in a heartbeat

Our approach to interventional cardiology services

When you have a heart condition, there's no time to lose. That's why our highly skilled interventional cardiologists are dedicated to finding efficient ways to bring you safe, high-quality care you can trust.

Interventional cardiologists perform only minimally invasive procedures. They use nonsurgical, catheter-based treatment to repair and treat multiple conditions.

We've pioneered incredible advances in our cardiac cath labs, including specialized operating suites where we diagnose and treat your condition all in one go. And we're a destination for high-risk, complex heart procedures.

Conditions we treat

  • chest pain (angina)
  • congenital heart disease
  • narrowed arteries (atherosclerosis)
  • damaged and weak blood vessels
  • heart attacks
  • heart valve disease

Tests and treatments

Atrial septic defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure

These are catheter procedures or surgery to close abnormal openings in the heart. ASD or PFO closure may be an option if you had a stroke caused by a blood clot that came from the heart. If a PFO doesn't cause problems, then you probably won't need treatment.

Cardiac heart catheterization

A cardiac catheterization can check blood flow in the coronary arteries. It also checks the function of different parts of the heart, such as the heart chambers, the heart valves and the walls of the heart.

Chronic total occlusions percutaneous coronary intervention (CTO PCI)

Only 1 to 2 percent of cardiologists in the U.S. can perform the full range of CTO PCI. Our team at WellSpan York Hospital is among them, earning international recognition for their work in this area. In fact, WellSpan York Hospital is among the top hospitals in the country for CTO PCI, performing an average of 250 of these procedures each year.

Coronary intervention, including stent implantation

Left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) procedure (WATCHMAN™)

WellSpan Health is #1 in the nation for left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) procedures, including WATCHMAN device implantation.

Peripheral vascular angiography and intervention

Shockwave intravascular lithotripsy

When bypass surgery isn’t an option or a bypass graft has failed, intravascular lithotripsy via Shockwave technology can help some people with severe arterial calcifications. Shockwave is a new treatment option that uses similar technology as that used to break up kidney stones. By 2023, cardiologists at WellSpan Health had already completed more than 500 treatments using Shockwave at WellSpan York Hospital, WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR)

WellSpan cardiologists are leading experts in the minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure, helping people avoid open-heart surgery. Since 2012, they have performed more than 1,200 TAVR procedures. In fact, they’ve become so adept at the complex procedure that they’ve shared their expertise with other doctors around the globe.

How we can help

Heart disease can sneak up on you quietly. Or it can announce itself with chest pain and pressure that may be signs of a heart attack. With interventional cath labs in York, Ephrata, Gettysburg and Lebanon, we can stop your heart attack within minutes, saving your heart and your life.

Local emergency medical services (EMS) sends your electrocardiogram (EKG) to us while you’re on the way to one of our hospitals, so we’re ready to begin your treatment within moments of your arrival.

Our specialists have the experience to help you address any heart-related problems. Interventional cardiology includes nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedures that can correct emergent conditions, such as heart attacks, or chronic problems, such as abnormal openings in the heart.

Nationally recognized expertise

We're internationally known for our innovative work with TAVR, we are first in the U.S. for WATCHMAN procedures, and we’re among the country's best for CTO/PCI, a minimally invasive alternative to bypass surgery. The hundreds of CTO/PCI procedures we perform each year have put us on the map, drawing patients from all over the East Coast.

Raising the standard

We've pioneered a revolutionary approach to diagnosing and treating heart disease, known as 4D computed tomography (CT). With this groundbreaking technology, we're able to diagnose and treat your heart condition during the same procedure, potentially redefining the standard of cardiac care.

Countless successes

We operate the busiest cath labs in our region. That high volume has allowed us to develop algorithms that lead to safe and successful procedures with CTO and other complications of heart disease.

Cutting-edge technology

Our cath labs are equipped with the latest technology, so we can give you the most advanced care. In addition to 3D imaging and models, and intravascular ultrasound, we also use Shockwave, which breaks up blockages with ultrasonic frequencies.
