We are gratified that others have recognized our efforts and are sincerely humbled by our many awards and accolades.

Healthgrades Hospital Recognition

In 2023, WellSpan Chambersburg and WellSpan York Hospitals were named as Among America's Best Hospitals in the country by Healthgrades, an online resource for information about physicians and hospitals. WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital received the distinguished honor of being one of Healthgrades America's 100 Best Hospitals Award™ recipients for the third year in a row (2021-2023), recognizing it as being in the top two percent of hospitals in the country. WellSpan York Hospital received the Healthgrades America's 250 Best Hospitals Award™, recognizing them as being in the top five percent of hospitals in the country. This is the third year in a row that WellSpan York Hospital has received the honor (2021-2023).

In addition, five WellSpan hospitals received numerous 2023 Healthgrades Specialty Excellence Awards. The awards recognize hospitals that deliver superior patient outcomes across the most common in-hospital procedures and conditions, including surgical care, critical care, cardiac care and surgery, gastrointestinal care and surgery, and bariatric surgery.

U.S. News & World Report High Performing Recognition

Numerous WellSpan hospitals have been honored by U.S. News & World Report with the High Performing recognition for 2022-23. Five of WellSpan's hospitals earned the accolades, including:

  • WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital
  • WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital
  • WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital
  • WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital
  • WellSpan York Hospital

The honor of High Performing is the highest award a hospital can earn for U.S. News' Best Hospitals Procedures & Conditions ratings. Their annual Procedures & Conditions ratings are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or elective procedures.

Newsweek's America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity

Newsweek named WellSpan one of "America's Greatest Workplaces for Diversity" on its inaugural list. Scoring was based on publicly available data, interviews with Human Resources professionals and feedback received from more than 350,000 employees from companies across the country.

American Heart Association Get With the Guidelines Awards

Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke or heart attack. WellSpan Health is ensuring its care teams are ready to step up to save lives. In 2022, the health system's acute care hospitals received 12 American Heart Association Get With The Guidelines awards for care related to heart disease and stroke. The recognition shows WellSpan’s commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of these potentially life-changing medical conditions.

Donate Life Hospital Challenge

Six WellSpan Health hospitals were named 2022 honorees from the Hospital and Health system Association of Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to increase promotion and awareness of organ, eye, and tissue donations. WellSpan York Hospital, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital, and WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital each earned the Titanium designation. WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital each earned the Platinum designation.

2019 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award

WellSpan Health received an Eisenberg Award in the category of Local Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality, which recognizes a project or initiative that focuses on making an impact at the local community, organization or regional level. These original projects involve successful system changes or interventions that make care safer or advocate on a patient's behalf. WellSpan Health received the award for its Central Alert Team, an innovative program that works to quickly detect and treat sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency.

Certified Comprehensive Stroke Center

WellSpan York Hospital has been certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, meaning that the hospital has met standards for treating the most complex stroke cases and is ready 24/7 to deliver advance stroke care to patients. WellSpan York Hospital is the only WellSpan facility in York, Adams, Lancaster and Lebanon counties with neuroendovascular surgery capabilities and to have earned Comprehensive Stroke Center certification, making it the regional referral center for stroke care.

Innovator Award for WellSpan Cancer Centers

The Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) recognized WellSpan Health with the 2019 ACCC Innovator Award. The award recognizes innovations that advance the goals of improving access, quality and value in cancer care delivery. WellSpan Health's work with developing and implementing a mobile app for radiation oncology patients led to this achievement.

American Heart Association’s Home Health Heart Failure Certification

In 2022, WellSpan VNA Home Care became among the first providers in the country to receive the American Heart Association's (AHA) Home Health Heart Failure certification. The AHA's heart failure certification focuses on the provider of care meeting or surpassing established standards that include program management, patient and caregiver education and support, care coordination, and clinical management.

Training Magazine’s Apex

WellSpan has a long history of being committed to education and training. Training Magazine ranks organizations based on statistics such as total training budget; percentage of payroll dedicated to training; number of training hours per employee program; goals, evaluation, measurement, and workplace surveys; hours of training per employee annually; and detailed formal programs. For the past 14 years, WellSpan is honored to have been chosen by Training Apex organization.

WellSpan's Inclusion Champion program was honored as one of this year’s five Outstanding Training Initiative Awards by Apex. Nearly 150 WellSpan team members graduated from the first offering of the program in 2022 and were trained to actively serve as allies and promoters of equity for each other and our patients.

Human Research Protection Program Accreditation

WellSpan Health has been accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Program (AAHRPP) since 2013. Accreditation reflects WellSpan Health's commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of research participants.

Living the Vision Award

WellSpan Health, along with community partners, was recognized by the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) in 2019 for innovative efforts to address housing securities for our most venerable patients in York County. The Living the Vision award recognizes health systems who demonstrate the “Triple Aim” of health care – improving population health and the patient experience, while reducing health care costs.

Stage 7 Status with HIMSS

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) has awarded five of WellSpan Health's hospitals with Analytics Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) level 7 status. This eight-stage (0-7) model measures the adoption and utilization of electronic medical record functions. WellSpan York Hospital, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, WellSpan Surgery & Rehabilitation Hospital, WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital and WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital all received this designation.

Top Employer Recognition

WellSpan Health has been recognized among best employers in Pennsylvania by Forbes, one of the nation’s leading and most respected business publications. WellSpan is rated highly on a variety of criteria including work environment, salary and opportunities for development. Forbes compiles the annual list based on a survey comprised of 70,000 employees of companies with at least 500 employees.

In addition, WellSpan was recognized by Becker’s Healthcare as a top destination for employment on its 150 Top Places to Work in Healthcare 2022 list. The factors earning WellSpan a spot on the list include workforce diversity, employee benefits, and opportunities for professional growth.
