A cancer diagnosis can change a person’s life in an instant. That’s why WellSpan Health is working to help people find cancer earlier, get care closer to home and connect with experts who can guide them through treatment. These efforts are part of WellSpan’s commitment to delivering exceptional care for all.

Bringing expertise closer to home

WellSpan is advancing cancer care through its ongoing collaboration with Johns Hopkins Medicine. This partnership combines the expertise of WellSpan’s Cancer Institute with the research, education and clinical capabilities of the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center.

“Cancer care is changing in ways that help us treat patients more personally and, when appropriate, with less invasive care,” said Dr. Nikhilesh Korgaonkar, chief medical officer, WellSpan Cancer Institute. “Across WellSpan, we are bringing together expert partnerships, advanced technology and coordinated care teams so more patients can get the care they need close to home.”

The collaboration gives patients access to second opinions, specialty expertise, clinical trials and advanced treatment options while allowing much of their care to remain in their community. Over the years, thousands of patients have benefited from this relationship, helping ensure people across Pennsylvania can receive advanced cancer care in their own communities.

WellSpan’s cancer services include medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, infusion therapy, breast care, genetic screening, nurse navigation, clinical trials and support services. Together, these programs help patients move from diagnosis to treatment and survivorship with a connected team.

Using artificial intelligence to find cancer earlier

Technology is also helping WellSpan find cancer sooner. WellSpan uses Aidoc, an artificial intelligence, or AI, tool that helps radiologists review medical scans. The tool can point out findings that may need a closer look. This helps care teams decide which patients may need follow-up sooner. The growth of WellSpan's AI capabilities is delivering measurable benefits for patients. In 2026, approximately 1.5 million medical imaging scans are expected to be analyzed using Aidoc technology. By rapidly flagging potentially critical findings and notifying care teams, the system has helped reduce average patient wait times from roughly 25 hours to under three hours.

Breast cancer screening is one example of how this technology can support earlier detection. WellSpan offers AI-assisted mammography, including Breast Care AI and 3D mammography, to help radiologists find subtle areas of concern during annual screenings. The tool does not replace a physician’s review; instead, it helps highlight images that may need a closer look. That can lead to quicker communication, faster follow-up testing and, when cancer is found, more timely treatment. For patients, that speed matters because breast cancer is often easier to treat when it is found early.

Expanding cancer care in Central Susquehanna Valley

WellSpan continues to invest in cancer care access in the Central Susquehanna Valley, including plans to grow oncology services in Lewisburg, led by Dr. Joshua Van Allen, a medical oncologist and hematologist This expansion helps patients receive more of the care they need closer to home, reducing travel time during a period that can already feel stressful and uncertain.

By connecting Central Susquehanna Valley patients with Dr. Van Allen and specialists across the WellSpan Cancer Institute, the program combines local convenience with the expertise and resources of a larger, coordinated cancer care network. Patients can benefit from coordinated care, specialty expertise and support services while staying connected to their community.

Strengthening care through Cancer Care Associates of York

WellSpan’s work with Cancer Care Associates of York is another way it is making cancer care easier for patients to navigate. The partnership brings doctors, treatment services, research options and support programs together to help patients move more smoothly from diagnosis to treatment and follow-up care.

This partnership also helps improve continuity of care for patients in York County and across the region. By aligning local providers with the broader WellSpan Cancer Institute network, more patients can access advanced treatments, clinical trials and support services through a coordinated team focused on their needs and support services through a coordinated team focused on their needs.

The WellSpan York Hospital expansion is another example of WellSpan’s investment in local care. By growing and improving services in York County, WellSpan is helping more patients get the care and support they need closer to home, including people facing cancer.

Helping families understand their risk

Cancer prevention starts with understanding your risk. Through The Gene Health Project, WellSpan offers genetic test that may determine a person's potential risk for certain cancers, including hereditary breast and ovarian cancer and colorectal cancer related to Lynch syndrome. Knowing if you are at increased risk can help you and your doctor personalize your health care and plan for a healthier future. If an increased genetic risk is identified, participants can meet with genetic counselor to better understand their results and how they may impact their health or their family's health.

Cancer care is built around patients

WellSpan continues to invest in better cancer care through new technology, genetic screening, expert care and more local services. The goal is simple: help patients get personal, advanced care close to home.
