Who:
Kara Ile, medical assistant, WellSpan Community Health Center
What:
One year ago, a simple question in a waiting room sparked a connection that would quietly grow into something unforgettable.
Each visit began the same way. As Kara Ile, medical assistant at WellSpan Community Health Center called a patient back, he would pause, look up and ask, “What is your name?” Then, with a hopeful smile, he’d follow with, “Kara, do you want to be my friend?” Without hesitation, her answer was always yes.
Over time, Kara noticed the small details that made their interactions special – especially his love for characters, most often the Ninja Turtles perched proudly on his hat. During one visit in the fall, a brief conversation about favorite turtles and their colors lingered with her long after the appointment ended. Later that day, Kara looked up each turtle and carefully wrote down their names and colors, tucking the note beneath her keyboard. She held onto it for six months, waiting for the next chance to reconnect.
When the patient returned this spring, Kara was ready. After completing the visit, she handed him a set of Ninja Turtle stickers – one for each character they had once talked about. In that moment, the room filled with joy. His face lit up, his voice carried excitement and what had started as a small gesture became a memory that meant everything.
“It wasn’t anything big,” Kara shared. “I just wanted him to know I remembered. Seeing how happy it made him made my day.”
The impact didn’t go unnoticed. Dr. D. Scott McCracken, family physician at WellSpan Community Health Center, heard about the exchange as soon as he entered the patient’s room, saw the carefully kept note and was moved by the thoughtfulness behind it.
“These are the moments that define what we do,” Dr. McCracken said. “It’s not just the care we provide – it’s the connections we build and the trust we earn through compassion, consistency and truly seeing our patients as individuals.”
For Kara, it was never about recognition. It was about friendship, trust and showing up in a meaningful way.
Words to live by:
For everyone who heard the story, it served as a powerful reminder: sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can leave the biggest, most lasting impact.
