Richard Kessler began donating blood in the early 1990s, motivated by a simple belief – that one small act could make a big difference for someone in need. For years, he gave consistently, never imagining that one day he would find himself on the receiving end of the very generosity he’d been offering to others.
In 2018, Rich’s life changed in an instant when he was involved in a head-on collision. He lost his spleen, suffered internal injuries, and ultimately underwent a leg amputation. To survive, Rich required blood transfusions, an experience that only deepened his appreciation for the donors who helped save his life.
At the WellSpan Blood Donor Center – Apple Hill, Rich donates one pint at a time, and those steady contributions have added up to more than 12.5 gallons – the equivalent of 100 individual donations.
“When I originally started donating, they had a ‘10 Gallon Club’ plaque on the wall,” he recalls. “I told myself, I’m going to get my name up there.”
Today, that recognition lives on as the ‘100 Procedures – Whole Blood Donation’ plaque, proudly displayed for all donors to see. And now, Rich’s name will be added to it – a milestone made official on May 8, 2026, when he reached his 100th donation.
“Rich is an inspiration to all of us in the blood donation community. He doesn’t have to give, yet he continues to show up, time after time, with a generosity that truly saves lives,” said Steve LaCour, laboratory supervisor, York - WellSpan Apple Hill Blood Donor Center. “People like Rich are the reason we do what we do.”
When asked why he continues to give, Rich’s answer is simple and sincere: “It’s something you can do that someone else can benefit from – doesn’t cost you any money and you’re helping someone else. It’s a selfless act.”
Rich’s story is one of resilience, generosity and full-circle impact – a gentle reminder that one pint and one life at a time, we can all make a difference.
If you would like to be like Rich and contribute to saving lives, consider donating blood today.
