Aspen Feeser is a standout player on the girls lacrosse team at Dover Area High School. Her passion for the game and her unwavering commitment are evident in every match she plays for the Eagles.
However, her journey took an unexpected turn during her freshman year, when she suffered a devastating tear in her left anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL. The ACL is a major ligament in the knee that connects the thighbone to the shinbone, helping to stabilize the knee joint. The injury abruptly ended the spring lacrosse season for Aspen.
Aspen sought the expertise of WellSpan orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Matthew Posner, who performed surgery to fix her injuries.
Post-surgery, Aspen's road to recovery was long and challenging. She committed herself to a rigorous physical therapy regimen, attending sessions weekly throughout the summer and into the fall. WellSpan athletic trainers helped her with stretching, a stimulation machine to strengthen her muscles, icing and a machine that uses ice and compression at the same time.
“My hope for Aspen was that she could return to lacrosse, as that was a big part of her sports identity,” said WellSpan athletic trainer Kaitlyn Merritt, who worked with Aspen, along with her athletic trainer colleague Dave App. “Seeing her being able to participate at full go was really big for her, so we helped boost her confidence for that.”
In November, eight months after she was injured, she received formal clearance to return to sports.
Aspen's first opportunity to return to sports was during the winter swim season. She dove back into the pool with the same enthusiasm and determination she had shown on the lacrosse field. Her efforts were rewarded as she qualified to compete at Counties where she beat some of her personal best times.
In the spring, Aspen's focus shifted back to lacrosse. As a sophomore, she was eager to return to the field and contribute to her team. Aspen's presence on the field was a source of inspiration as she motivated her fellow team members.
She is equally eager for her junior year season.
“I am truly grateful to have returned to my normal activities and daily routines. Being able to participate in sports alongside my friends makes the experience even better,” Aspen said.
Beyond lacrosse, Aspen's recovery also allowed her to return to one of her favorite hobbies: skiing. The ability to ski again was a significant milestone for her, as it not only brought her joy but also reinforced her belief in the power of perseverance and hard work.
