WellSpan BrightSpot: A small drawing that led to a big smile

Who:
Diane Amoling, receptionist, WellSpan Philhaven

What:
Sometimes, it’s the smallest gestures that make the biggest difference – especially for pediatric patients and their families.

During a recent outpatient visit, Diane Amoling, receptionist at WellSpan Philhaven, noticed a young boy struggling to put on his visitor badge. When his mother asked him to wear it, he hung his head and said no – twice.

Rather than insisting, Diane paused and thought creatively. “If I draw a picture on it, will you wear it?”, she asked. The boy looked up, smiled and said yes.

When this occurred during the holiday season, a simple Christmas tree seemed just right. It was just enough for the young boy’s face to light up instantly, and the mood shifted for both him and his mother.

“That moment reminded me how powerful small gestures can be,” Diane shared. “Parents get a win and can relax a little, and the child feels seen and cared for. It’s not just about the badge – it’s about kindness.”

Words to live by:
For Diane, this experience resonates personally. “I see situations like this often, even with adults. People just want to be heard and accepted. If I can help – even with something as simple as a drawing – I’m in!”

In health care, moments like these are a quiet reminder: sometimes, the simplest acts of empathy leave the most lasting impact.
