WellSpan Health announced today it has named Keith Smith as chief legal officer for the system. Smith will lead the Office of General Counsel for the health system as a strategic advisor, overseeing legal strategy, corporate governance and insurance programs.

Smith joined WellSpan as vice president and deputy general counsel in 2022. He was previously in private practice at Moore & Van Allen, PLLC in North Carolina, where he was a member of the firm’s health care group, providing legal advice on compliance, risk management, governance and business transactions. Prior to that, he was executive vice president and general counsel at Atrium Health, where he was accountable for audit services, privacy and insurance programs, among others. He also served in various other roles for the organization in his 22 years with Atrium Health. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Atrium Health is part of Advocate Health, the third-largest nonprofit health system in the United States.
At WellSpan, Smith has managed the day-to-day operations of the Office of General Counsel and provided legal advice and counsel on a wide range of matters. In his new role, he will report to Roxanna Gapstur Ph.D. R.N., president and CEO of WellSpan.
