Every birth is unique, but Cooper’s was one in 80,000.
Cooper Pretty was born on July 13, 2022, at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, still encased in his amniotic sac, the protective, fluid-filled membrane that kept him safe for the nine months.
This rare phenomenon is medically known as an en caul birth, but it is also often referred to as a "mermaid birth” because the baby comes into the world inside a clear, water-filled bubble.
"En caul births are rare because providers often break the water to speed up the delivery process, or it breaks on its own," explained Nancy Reinhart, a nurse midwife at WellSpan OB/GYN who delivered Cooper.
Nancy says she’s been fortunate to witness at least four such births during her tenure at the hospital.
"It’s a special experience," she said, emphasizing the rarity and beauty of these births.
Extraordinary birth, extraordinary care
During her pregnancy, Cooper’s mom, Shannon, formed a strong bond with Nancy, which set the stage for a positive experience.
"She made me feel empowered. She always gave me options," Shannon said, reflecting on Nancy's supportive care.
Shannon wanted to try a natural delivery without anesthesia. Nancy and the skilled birthing team at WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital were there every step of the way for Shannon and her husband, Zach, offering various tools and techniques to ensure her comfort during labor. They also supported Cooper’s safety after the unusual birth.
"Midwives are at the heart of our labor and delivery teams," said Julia Wheeling, women and children service line director. "They provide kind and dedicated care, offering comfort and support to parents while also playing a crucial role in improving delivery outcomes. Our midwives work closely with the entire health care team to ensure a positive and empowering experience for the entire family."
WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital has recently been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the nation’s best hospitals for high-quality nursing care. The experienced team at the hospital provides a state-of-the-art facility with a family-centered approach to maternity care.
