Who: Frederick “Marcus” Engram, a security officer at WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital.
What: When Marcus makes his rounds at the hospital, he always has several small cards with dad jokes printed on them neatly tucked into his security vest. If he has a moment, he will stop to share a corny one-liner or pun with team members, visitors and patients.
Marcus got started on his dad joke routine two years ago. He had gotten to know a hospital housekeeper, sharing jokes with her when she neatened his office. During a Security Week luncheon, she gave him a box filled with dad joke cards. She thought that Marcus, an actual dad in real life (he has a 6-year-old daughter), would enjoy the humor.
Boy did he ever.
As a security guard, my boss said my job is to watch the office.
I’m on Season 6 so far, and not sure what this has to do with security.
Now Marcus tries to tell a different joke every day. Team members have added to his repertoire with books of dad jokes. He is never short on material.
How do you get an astronaut’s baby to fall asleep?
You rocket.
Heightening his delivery is that Marcus, who is over 6 feet tall, weighs 240 pounds, has a shaved head and is dressed head to toe in black, delivers his jokes with a totally deadpan expression. It catches people off guard at first, and then they crack up.
“I love working with patients and my team,” he says.
Words to live by: Growing up in a military family, Marcus moved often and lived overseas, and he said it helped him learn how to read people and fit into a situation. He says not everyone wants to hear a joke and he tries to sense if a visitor or a patient needs a listening ear or a box of tissues instead.
“You never know where people are coming from, what they are dealing with, and you want to show empathy,” he says. “I always say, ‘Is there anything I can help with today?’ People open up and let their stress out. I tell them they are in good hands here and that we have a great team.”
If they seem receptive to a silly pun, then he will deliver that too.

Nurse manager Brianna Blouse says Marcus brightens people’s days.
“You’re ready to smile when you see him coming,” she says, noting she shares his jokes with her kids when she goes home.
Sandy Morton, a unit secretary in the pre-op area of the hospital, always is ready to hear a dad joke.
“I love ‘em! I always laugh,” she says. “When he doesn’t come in, it’s like ‘Where is Marcus? Where is the laughter?’ ”

To the dock.
