WellSpan is proud to partner with organ procurement organizations that care for patients with advanced, end-state organ disease. Each year in Pennsylvania, thousands of transplant procedures are performed, including kidney, lung, liver, heart and pancreas transplants, as well as kidney and lung transplants for children. These organizations also perform combined transplants, including for double-lung, liver-lung, kidney-pancreas, heart-lung and heart-kidney.
In 2024, WellSpan helped impact this important and life-saving cause by facilitating organ donations that were taken to these transplant centers. Forty organ donors’ gifts originating from WellSpan resulted in 78 transplanted organs; 52 kidneys; 17 livers; five hearts and 4 lungs.
One hundred-thirty tissue donors’ gifts resulted in countless numbers of recipients who reside in our communities, receiving the following:
- 111 corneas
- 68 bone transplants
- 61 skin transplants
- 19 heart valves
- 3 saphenous veins
WellSpan’s history of collaboration and partnership with Gift of Life Donor Program began in 1974 supporting families, encouraging donations, and supporting patients awaiting a life-saving transplant.
As of June 2025, there were 4,549 patients waiting for a transplant in Pennsylvania, 75 percent of whom are residents.
