About genetic counseling

Genetic counseling can play a significant role before and during pregnancy for expecting families. Prenatal genetic counseling can give you information about your child’s risk of having a genetic disorder or birth defect.

If you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant and want to understand more about your pregnancy, you may choose to have prenatal genetic testing and counseling.

Who is a candidate for prenatal genetic testing?

All pregnant people will be offered prenatal genetic testing by your obstetric care provider and you may be referred to the genetic counseling team if you have certain risk factors such as:

  • You will be 35 or older when the baby is born
  • You have received blood test results indicating an increased risk of certain genetic conditions
  • You have been exposed to harmful substances like medicines, alcohol, drugs or chemicals during pregnancy
  • You have experienced multiple miscarriages or pregnancy losses

What to expect

The genetic counselor relationship may begin with a visit to a trained genetic counselor. We'll review information about your pregnancy, health and family history. We'll then discuss recommended testing based on your personal needs.

The tests we perform include:

  • non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)
  • carrier screening
  • diagnostic testing

Genetic testing results are processed quickly and explained clearly by our genetic counselors.
