What to expect

Before your treatment

• You'll have a consultation to review your medical history, current medications, drug allergies and use of vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
• Your doctor will evaluate your general health status, including any pre-existing health conditions and risk factors.
• You’ll discuss goals and expectations and learn available options.
• Your provider will examine your face and take photographs.
• He or she will recommend a course of treatment and may mark your face to indicate where the injections will be administered.

During your treatment

• Your skin will be cleansed and a topical anesthetic may be applied to numb the area.
• Your provider will use a thin needle to inject small amounts of filler into your skin.
• The injections may cause a pinching or stinging sensation.
• The entire process usually takes less than an hour.

After your treatment

• Your skin will be cleansed and you may be given an ice pack to reduce swelling.
• You may experience bruising, swelling or discomfort after the injections. These side effects are usually mild and go away within a few days.
• You can resume most of your normal activities immediately, but your provider may recommend avoiding strenuous exercise or physical activity for a day or two.
• The results of your treatment may be visible immediately, but it can take up to a few weeks for the full effects to develop.
• Depending on the type of filler used and where it is injected in the face, results can last from several months a year or more.
