What is a breast lift?
A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that raises sagging or drooping breasts and enhances the appearance of the nipples and areolas. Excess skin is removed, and the breast tissue is repositioned to restore a firmer, more youthful appearance. The results of a breast lift are noticeable immediately, with final results appearing over several months as the breasts settle into their new shape and position.
There are different reasons to seek a breast lift. A lift can be especially beneficial for women who have experienced significant weight loss, had one or more pregnancies and who breastfed. In some cases, lift surgery is needed to improve the breast shape and contour, or to correct issues such as asymmetry or enlarged areolas.
Types of breast lifts
Plastic surgeons are trained to use incision techniques based on a patient’s existing breast tissue, the amount of excess skin to be removed, and the patient’s personal goals. Your surgeon will also consider how to achieve optimal results with the least conspicuous scarring possible.
- Crescent lift — small scar to correct minimal sagging
- Peri-areolar or “donut” lift — corrects mild sagging with a single scar
- Vertical or “lollipop” lift — corrects moderate sagging & provides more extensive reshaping
- Inverted T or “anchor” lift — dramatic reshaping to correct extensive sagging
Combining a breast lift with augmentation
Sometimes, a breast lift alone cannot produce a patient’s desired results. If your breasts look “deflated” or have lost volume due to aging, weight loss or pregnancy, you may want to consider getting breast implants during breast lift surgery. This combination will result in larger, lifted breasts during a single procedure and the same recovery time as a lift. Depending on patient goals and/or their anatomy, a lift and augmentation may not be best performed in the same surgery but rather done in 2 stages or separate surgeries. Your plastic surgeon will discuss the best option to obtain your aesthetic goals.
Who is a candidate for a breast lift?
You may be a good candidate for a breast lift if:
- You are in overall good health and maintain a stable weight.
- You are bothered by sagging or drooping breasts.
- Your breasts have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous.
- When unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease.
- Your nipples and areolas point downward.
- You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas.
- One breast is lower than the other.
- You are no longer interested in getting pregnant.
What to expect when getting a breast lift
Before your breast lift:
- Get lab testing or a medical evaluation.
- Take certain medications or adjust your current medications.
- Get a baseline mammogram before surgery and another one after surgery to monitor any future changes in breast tissue.
- Quit smoking and/or using any nicotine products.
- Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding.
During your breast lift:
- The procedure typically takes 2-3 hours.
- Dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions after the procedure.
- You'll need to wear an elastic bandage or supportive bra to minimize swelling and support your breasts as they heal.
- A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid
After your breast lift:
- Over time, post-surgical swelling will resolve, and incision lines will fade.
- Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to care for yourself.
- Maintain your weight.
- Keep a healthy lifestyle.
- Your doctor may prescribe medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection.
