Dawn Jeffries lives in Loganton and recognized that her community needed help. The small Clinton County borough is located at least 30 minutes from the nearest hospital or doctor’s office, so it’s difficult for some residents to easily access health care. When Dawn learned about WellSpan Mobile Health, she reached out to bring WellSpan’s expert services to her friends and neighbors.

“Preventive care is so important,” says Dawn, community liaison at the Sugar Valley Rural Charter School. “My passion is to help bring that care to people in any way I can and put their minds at ease.”

WellSpan’s mobile health unit is on the road more than 100 days out of the year offering blood pressure, preventive health and bone density heel screenings, among several other services. Patients are also screened for hunger, transportation and housing insecurities. They are also provided with local resources to get assistance, if needed.

WellSpan Community Health team members found that only 75% of adults are accessing primary care in Clinton, Union, Snyder, Northumberland and Lycoming counties, which they hope to improve over time. In all, 740 patients were screened on the mobile health unit in these counties over the last year.

“Our overall goal is to make our country healthier,” says Donald Lynch, coordinator for WellSpan Mobile Health. “We can reach more patients by taking our care to them. It helps them feel more relaxed and it’s much more convenient.”

Donald was a paramedic for more than 30 years and is familiar with treating patients in the comfort of their home. Maintaining that comfort while providing preventive care remains important to him.

“Helping people stay healthy is something I’ve worked toward throughout my entire career,” he says.

Today, the mobile health unit makes regular stops in Loganton. Dawn encourages everyone to take advantage of WellSpan Mobile Health if it’s coming to their neighborhood. She and her community are thankful that Donald and his team provide these important services.

“It warms my heart that they were willing to help a small town like ours,” Dawn says.
