The drive to serve our neighbors is deeply ingrained in our culture. Dr. Matthew Reish embodies this dedication, earning both respect and gratitude from his patients, who often credit him with helping them return to the activities they love.
Dr. Reish’s commitment was instilled in him from a young age, as his family has a rich history of contributing to their community. It all began with his grandparents: his grandfather donated land to the local hospital, and his grandmother was a dedicated hospital volunteer, laying the foundation for a family tradition of giving back. His father, also an orthopedic surgeon, moved to the Lewisburg area in the 1970s and, recognizing a need for orthopedic care here, established a thriving medical practice.
“Multiple generations in my family recognized medical need in the community, and built a reputation by responding to that need,” says Dr. Reish. “In orthopedics, you’re working with patients who are struggling with pain and quality of life issues. They can’t sleep and can’t do simple daily activities.”
Inspired by his father’s example, Reish felt a profound calling to serve others and pursued a medical career. After completing his training in Philadelphia and a fellowship in Southern California, he returned to his hometown, eager to make a difference in the community where he grew up and where his family has deep roots.
With the legacy of great care built by SUN Orthopedics, Dr. Reish and the team of talented orthopedic physicians now provide the same exceptional care as WellSpan Orthopedics. The same team that patients know and trust can be relied upon for high-quality, compassionate orthopedic services, including joint replacement surgery and sports medicine. As part of the WellSpan Orthopedics team at WellSpan Evangelical Hospital, Dr. Reish specializes in joint surgeries including shoulder and knee replacements, as well as arthroscopic procedures. He is renowned for his personalized approach to patient care. True to his family’s legacy, he remains actively involved in the community, coaching his children’s sports teams and contributing to school district projects.
The Reish family’s legacy isn’t just about the medical care they provide — it’s about the personal connections they forge. Patients frequently return to thank Dr. Reish for the impact he’s had on their lives. Seeing his patients regain their mobility, with less pain, and return to their daily activities with renewed energy and joy is, for Dr. Reish, the most rewarding part of his career. Providing exceptional care is just one way WellSpan Evangelical is here for good.
“We’ve been Evangelical Community Hospital for a lot of years, and I have a family history with Sun Orthopedics that spans over 50 years. Now that we have joined WellSpan, it’s important to me that our patients understand that the same great care and providers are still here, just with a different name. And with that new name comes access to even more technology and services, allowing us to do even more. Dr. Matthew Reish, WellSpan Orthopedics
