Growing up in the Susquehanna Valley, I’ve always felt a deep connection to this area. Evangelical Community Hospital is where I was born and where I now work as a certified nurse midwife. It’s been a part of my life from the very beginning.
“Both my brother and I were born in this hospital, and I’ve lived here most of my life. I intentionally came back to work at the hospital because this community is very important to me. It was always my dream to become a nurse midwife at Evangelical because of the personal experiences I had here which led me to midwifery. I think we all have connections to this hospital.” Heidi Hagan, Certified Nurse Midwife, WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital
After high school, I left to pursue my education, but I always knew I would return. My dream was to come back and serve the community that raised me. That dream has come true, and I take immense pride in my work and the services we provide.
My passion for my job extends far beyond just providing medical care. I value the relationships I build with my patients and their families. Many women return to me for multiple pregnancies, and I often see them bringing their family members to the hospital for other health needs. This community-building aspect is what I cherish most about being a midwife. It’s not just about delivering babies; it’s about being there for people during some of the most important moments of their lives.
In addition to my professional duties, I have a unique way of spreading joy in the community. I paint rocks with messages of hope and positivity and place them around the hospital campus and the town. This project, known as the Central Pennsylvania Kindness Rocks, has become a source of comfort and inspiration for many. Whether someone is walking to their car after a tough appointment or just taking a stroll, finding a brightly painted rock with a hopeful message can make a difficult day a little brighter.
I see WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital as a vital part of the fabric of the Susquehanna Valley, a place where generations have been cared for. Looking ahead, I’m excited about the future and the growth that WellSpan will bring. For me, the hospital is more than just a place of work — it’s a symbol of the community’s strength and resilience, and I’m dedicated to being a part of it for years to come. The hospital’s importance in the Susquehanna Valley cannot be overstated. It serves as a place where many people are born, receive care and form lasting relationships. The presence of the WellSpan team is welcomed, and there is great anticipation for the growth and future developments that will benefit the community and its residents.
My story is a testament to the hospital’s enduring legacy and its commitment to being a place of healing and hope for all. Both WellSpan Evangelical Hospital and I are here for good!
