Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare:
I grew up in a family of many doctors so I initially wanted to forge my own path. I went to college in Virginia to study Spanish and business. However, after a few years of studying this, I realized that my true passion lay within the sciences as well as with helping people. As soon as I realized I could combined these within the domain of medicine, I changed course and directed myself toward medical school.
I chose cardiology because I was intrigued by the complexity of the patients, the speed at which it moved and by the fact that we could fix the underlying cause of a patient's symptoms. Within advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation I found that we could take people with severe symptoms and a failing heart and give them a second chance.
What I do when I'm not seeing patients:
Other than spending time with my family, I enjoy building furniture, carpentry, and woodworking. I am very good with my hands and it gives me a way to do something totally unrelated after a tough day at work.
