Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare:
I had a strong interest in mathematics and science during high school and planned to pursue a career in accounting after graduation. I joined a local volunteer fire company and completed EMT training at WellSpan York Hospital. After my first ambulance call where I helped a badly injured patient, I knew I had to pursue a career in medicine. During college, I also became interested in medical research. This work was scientifically exciting but I missed patient care and chose to attend medical school. Currently, I'm able to perform research and see patients which makes for a fulfilling career!
What I want my patients to know about me:
I work as an academic hospitalist at WellSpan York Hospital. This means I only see patients who are admitted to the hospital and that I work with residents (doctors-in-training). One of the main teaching points I stress with the residents is the importance of good communication. I always do my best to communicate with not only the patient and patient's family but also other specialists and even the patient's family physician when needed. I feel patients get better care when there is good communication throughout the whole team.
What I do when I'm not seeing patients:
I am married with two pre-teenage children. Their activities, which include horseback riding, golf and music lessons, keep me quite busy! When I do get free time, I enjoy motorcycling, working around the yard and vacationing (yearly trip to Ocean City, MD). My goal for the next year is for me and my wife to learn golf.
