About Me

Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare:

Growing up, surrounded by expectations of well-meaning people, it was difficult to sort out who I was from what I thought I should be. Today, I understand my drive to be a doctor not as scrambling toward a prize beyond reach, but accepting strengths and desires I always had. I examined closely many clues--thoughts, words, feelings, and reactions within myself and from others. I now see becoming a doctor as a natural match between the profession with its complex demands and my own talents, temperament, and interests. Theologian Fredrick Buechner defines vocation as “the place where one’s deep gladness meets the world’s need.”

What I want my patients to know about me:

The type of physician I am is shaped by the challenges of my life experience. The son of two Boston public school teachers, I saw closeness that comes from a family working hard and struggling. I recognize the sacrifices made on my behalf, and I learned to succeed using whatever resources were available. I realize my fortune beyond measure, such as my education and the love of a close-knit family. I grew up in Boston, Massachusetts in a racially and ethnically diverse community where I worked with, became friends with, and learned from people of different backgrounds and experiences. I came to understand the unique challenges--occupational, environmental, and social--many families face. In part, that fueled my determination to become a physician, to use my knowledge and skills to effect more positive and longer-term health changes in my patients. As a physician, I serve not just the patients I treat but the communities which we both call home.

What I do when I'm not seeing patients:

My Christian faith is the foundation on which I build my life. I am married to an amazing wife, Elaine, who was born in Singapore and came to the United States to go to college. We have three children (boy-girl-boy) who keep us active. When I am not at the hospital, I may be found coaching athletic teams, volunteering in the community, or participating in church-related activities.
