Home-Like Hospital Delivery Setting

WellSpan hospitals have labor and delivery rooms specially designed for your care during labor and birth. We offer epidurals and Nitrous oxide for pain relief, if needed or desired. The rooms all have a private bathroom with a shower as well as a rocking chair and a sleep chair. If you are scheduled to have a Cesarean birth, we have Cesarean delivery rooms and a recovery room within the labor and delivery unit.

Comfortable Labor, Delivery and Recovery Suites

After delivery, you and your baby will move to our beautiful suites, which features spacious, bright and cheerfully decorated private rooms. Each room offers roomy bathroom with shower and hairdryer, refrigerator, bedside controls for lights, television and telephone, convertible sleep-sofa for your support person and WiFi access.

Getting Off to a Healthy Start

After giving birth, you will stay in your labor and delivery room for approximately two hours. This is a wonderful time to initiate skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding. We provide new moms with the option of “rooming in,” which means that your baby will stay with you for the majority of your hospital stay.

Your Birthing Support Team

For your safety and to allow your care team to care for you effectively, up to three support people are permitted in your room while laboring. Each person will be issued a security badge that they must wear at all times. Those who remain in the waiting area will have access to coffee and tea, phone charging station, and a TV. As long as you and baby are doing well two hours after delivery, we do not limit the number of visitors in your room

Education for the Whole Family

While you’re in the hospital, our nurses are expert teachers and will provide you with learning tools to meet the needs of you and your family. You’ll learn about care of your newborn, importance of immunizations, hearing screening and early intervention opportunities, safe sleep, shaken baby concerns, crib and home safety and car seat use and recall information.

Convenient Access to World-Class NICU

Should your baby require extra care, we have NICU services at WellSpan York Hospital and WellSpan Ephrata Community Hosptial. Our neonatologists (physicians who specialize in newborn medicine) are available onsite 24 hours a day. Our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) offers state-of-the-art care for premature and critically ill newborns.

Breastfeeding Services

During your hospital stay, breastfeeding mothers have access to The Breastfeeding Center, whose staff members are International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). They are experts who can help you recognize and address your breastfeeding concerns. At least one consultant is available every day in the hospital to see inpatients. Breastfeeding services are also available as outpatient services after leaving the hospital.

Postpartum Services

The birth of a child can be a joyous and exciting time, but following childbirth, some women may experience postpartum disorders that can adversely affect a woman's mental health. Most of the time, the "baby blues" last for a few weeks and usually disappear on their own. However, if the symptoms don't lessen after a few weeks, or if they're so severe that they interfere with your ability to complete everyday tasks, you may have a more severe form of depression – called postpartum depression – that requires medical treatment.

MommyTalk Support Group

MommyTalk is a free monthly group in York County designed to connect new moms with useful information in an environment that allows for social interaction and sharing. Each month, the group focuses on a topic geared towards new moms and allows time for open discussion. All new moms are welcome. Feel free to hold your baby in your arms if you don't have childcare.

Toddler Time Support Group

Once your baby has reached one year of age, you are both welcome to graduate to Toddler Time. This free monthly group continues to explore the challenges and changes parents face as their babies approach the age of three. Toddler Time meets the first Monday of every month from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.at WellSpan York Hospital Childbirth & Family Education.

Breastfeeding Support Group

We are here to support our breastfeeding moms.

  • Come to our free York County Breastfeeding Support group held the second and fourth Monday of every month, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and the first Thursday of every month, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
  • In Lebanon, our Breastfeeding Support groups meet the second and fourth Tuesday of most months, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., and a Wednesday evening in most months, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

At these meetings, we provide you with opportunity for our moms to come together as a group to ask questions and talk with an international board certified lactation consultant as well as with other breastfeeding moms. Whether you are just beginning your breastfeeding journey, are an accomplished breastfeeding mom, or provide your baby with breastmilk by pumping, we’d love for you to be part of our community, no matter where you delivered your baby.

Mommy Support Group

Did you know baby blues can affect up to 20% of new moms? Our free Mommy Support group is designed to provide new moms with encouragement and helpful information in an environment that allows for social interaction and sharing. You are not alone in this! Every second Monday of the month, 6:30 - 7:30pm, join us at York Hospital Childbirth and Family Education Queensgate Towne Center, to participate in open and honest discussion led by experts in the field.

Care for Opioid-Dependent Moms and Babies

Whenever possible, we are committed to keeping babies with moms after birth, even in the case of babies born dependent on opioids. We offer specialized, family-centered education for substance abuse, including soothing techniques and massage for the withdrawing baby, which can help reduce dependency on medications.

Keystone 10 Initiative

WellSpan is proud to participate in the Keystone 10 Initiative , a statewide baby friendly breastfeeding quality program that aims to improve the protection, promotion, and support of breastfeeding for all Pennsylvania moms and babies.
