Oncology Rehabilitation Services
The objective of oncology rehabilitation is to improve a patient's quality of life. Treatment may occur at any stage of the care and/or recovery process.
Each patient is individually evaluated to determine his/her needs. An appropriate treatment program is then designed specifically for her/him.
Rehabilitation programs offered at WellSpan include treatment for:
- Deconditioning from treatment
- Limited mobility
- Decreased strength
- Tissue tightness and scars
- Bladder dysfunction
- Difficulty swallowing or slurred speech
Treatments may include:
- Exercise (strengthening, range of motion, conditioning, etc.)
- Mobility training
- Soft tissue massage
- Management of swelling
- Balance and walking activities
- Fitness education
- Speech therapy for eating, swallowing or talking
Cancer patients may have a free assessment visit in order to talk with a therapist and discuss the need for treatment. The results will be discussed with the patient and reported to his/her physician. A collaborative decision for therapy can then be made. In addition, the Adams Cancer Center and the York Cancer Center provide the most comprehensive programs of cancer care in our area.
The Centers provide education and support services to outpatients through oncology nurses, social workers, dietitians and financial counselors.
Our staff works closely with doctors, other health care professionals, community agencies and hospitals in order to serve the patient's needs in the most caring and effective way possible.
