Who should undergo an genetic evaluation for cancer?

Generally, people at risk for an inherited cancer gene have one or more immediate family member (father, mother, sister, brother) or secondary family member (grandparent, aunt, uncle) who were diagnosed with:

  • Specific types of cancer that were diagnosed before age 50, including breast, colorectal and uterine (endometrial) cancer
  • Specific types of cancer diagnosed at any age, including ovarian and male breast cancer
  • Bilateral cancers, such as cancer in both breasts or kidneys
  • Multiple colon polyps in the same individual
  • Rare cancers or tumors in a close relative
  • Multiple cancers in the same individual or on the same side of the family, for example melanoma in more than one site, or related types of cancer (e.g., breast/ovarian, colorectal/uterine, melanoma/pancreatic)

What is the role of a Genetic Counselor?

WellSpan's Genetic Counselors provide information and support to individuals who may be at risk for a variety of inherited genetic conditions, as well as families who have members with genetic disorders. Our counselors can:

  • Identify families at risk for genetic disorders
  • Investigate the problem present in the family
  • Interpret information about the disorder
  • Analyze inheritance patterns and risks for recurrence
  • Review available options with family members if a risk is discovered

Our counselors also provide supportive counseling to families, serve as patient advocates and refer patients and families to community and state support services. They serve as educators and a resource for patients, health care professionals and the community.

Wish WellSpan, physicians and patients are choosing a partner who will guide educate, coordinate and provide individualized care for you every step of the way.
