Blood Glucose Meter & Insurance Coverage

Many plans cover strips through prescription plans so be sure to verify prescription plan coverage. Sometimes it’s more cost effective through DME (durable medical equipment) so you should check your coverage.

Note: Different plans cover varying amounts of the meter/ strips; there are exceptions to the list below.

Recommended meters by each company:

  • Abbott: Freestyle Freedom, Lite Insulinx or Precision x-tra
  • Accu-chek: Nano, Aviva or Compact Plus
  • Bayer: Contour, Contour Next, Contour USB or Breeze 2
  • Lifescan/One Touch: Ultra, Ultra 2, Ultra Smart, Ultra Mini or Verio

Note: need to use a pharmacy or mail-order supplier who is enrolled with Medicare and each of these suppliers may only offer certain meter(s). The meter(s) offered varies from supplier to supplier.

Starting July 2013, Medicare will implement a National Mail-Order Program for diabetes testing supplies.

When it starts, you’ll need to use a Medicare national mail-order contract supplier for Medicare to pay for diabetic testing supplies that are delivered to your home. If you don’t want diabetes testing supplies delivered to your home, you can go to any local store that’s enrolled with Medicare and buy them there.

If you choose to NOT use a supplier who is enrolled with Medicare you will have to pay a higher co-pay.

After meet $100 deductible Medicare covers 80% of strips & lancets. Will pay for 100 strips per month if use insulin & 100 strips per 3 months if do not use insulin (may get exceptions if needed)

This search will provide you with WellSpan Medical Group and Northern Lancaster County (Ephrata) Medical Group primary care physicians and specialists. If we don’t have a WellSpan Medical Group physician to meet your criteria, the search will expand to include community physicians who partner with WellSpan Medical Group physicians through the WellSpan Provider Network or provide care to patients on the Medical Staffs of WellSpan’s Hospitals.
