da Vinci® ... Changing the Experience of Surgery at WellSpan York Hospital

Through the WellSpan York Hospital Robotic Surgery Program, WellSpan has coupled the leading-edge technology of three da Vinci® Surgical Systems with 21 highly skilled surgeons and other clinical staff to offer residents of central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland a minimally invasive alternative to major surgery. The program benefits patients in need of treatment for certain cardiac, gynecologic (benign), gynecologic oncology, thoracic, urologic, urogynecologic and general conditions. Since the program began in October 2008, surgeons and clinical staff have performed more than 2,200 surgeries using the da Vinci® Surgical System.

The da Vinci® Surgical System itself is a sophisticated robotic platform designed to enable complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach.

Da _Vinci _300This innovation results in many potential patient benefits, including:

  • Significantly less pain
  • Less blood loss and need for transfusion
  • Fewer complications including lower risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Quicker recovery and return to normal activities
  • Smaller incisions resulting in minimal scaring
  • Better outcomes and greater patient satisfaction

This leading edge technology paired with quality surgeons and surgical teams has allowed us to create a unique program. The program's overall main purpose is to ensure the best possible surgical care and outcomes for our patients. This goal is accomplished through:

  • Surgeon/surgical team recruitment, training and certification
  • Creation and implementation of best practices
  • Education of residents, students and the community in general
  • The growth of robotic surgery within WellSpan

Through this program, the da Vinci Surgical System and our experienced, skilled surgeons and surgical teams, we can provide the type of care our patients desire and deserve right in their own community.

More About the da Vinci® Surgical System

The da Vinci Surgical System is a sophisticated robotic platform designed to enable complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach. The da Vinci System consists of an ergonomic surgeon's console, a patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a high-performance 3D HD vision system and proprietary EndoWrist® instruments.

The da Vinci provides surgeons with enhanced capabilities, including high-definition 3D vision and a magnified view. Unlike conventional surgical approaches, the target anatomy appears at high magnification, in brilliant color and with natural depth of field.

Your surgeon controls the da Vinci System, which translates hand and finger movements into smaller, more precise movements of the tiny EndoWrist instruments positioned inside your body. This instruments' jointed-wrist design actually exceeds the natural range of motion of the human hand providing the surgeon greater flexibility for intricate work.

Though it is often called a "robot," the da Vinci robotic system cannot act on its own. Instead, the surgery is performed entirely by the surgeon.

The superior visualization, enhanced dexterity, greater precision and ergonomic comfort of the da Vinci Surgical System makes it possible for your surgeon to perform complex procedures through a few tiny openings. As a result, you will probably be able to get back to normal activities faster without the usual prolonged recovery following major surgery.  Many people across the county have already had this type of patient experience.
