Cardiology Services

Early detection and treatment of heart disease can save lives. The Cardiology Department offers up-to-date technology and personal, caring service.

Services offered include:

  • Electrocardiograms (EKG/ECG): This procedure measures the electrical impulse, which causes the heart to beat, and can help detect heart attack, arrhythmias, conduction abnormalities, and, in some cases, coronary heart disease.
  • Stress tests: This procedure, most commonly performed on a treadmill, can give the doctor valuable information about the presence of coronary artery disease and the work your heart is able to do.
  • Echocardiograms (ECHO): This ultrasound test of the heart enables technicians and physicians to see heart walls, heart wall motion, valves and valve movement. The ECHO is also used to detect lesions or blood clots in the heart and helps determine heart function.
  • Holter Monitors: A patient usually wears a portable monitor for 24 hours, during which time the heartbeats are recorded on a tape. The tracing is scanned by a cardiac lab technician to check for irregular heartbeats, decreased blood flow to the heart, heart rate, and problems with the electrical conduction system within the heart.
  • Noninvasive Arterial Study: This study is done using blood pressure measurements of limbs, as well as Doppler waveforms, to evaluate blood flow through arteries of the legs.
  • Transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE): A TEE is done using an ultrasonic probe inserted through the mouth and into the esophagus. Through the esophagus, the physician can obtain clear pictures of the heart that are not obstructed by the lungs or the chest wall. These pictures aid the physician in diagnosing valve, heart wall and vessel disorders and blood clots or lesions of the heart.
  • Pacemaker Clinic: This clinic provides pacemaker patients and their families with information about their pacemaker, as well as monthly or bi-monthly follow-up services that help to evaluate pacemaker function. A more in-depth pacemaker check is done at the hospital every six months, or one year, depending on the type of pacemaker.
  • The Center for Heart Care: This program combines nutrition counseling, education, medication monitoring and exercise to keep heart failure patients feeling better and to keep them out of the hospital. .
  • Cardiovascular Lab: The Cardiovascular Lab offers low risk diagnostic cardiac catheterizations as well as diagnostic and interventional vascular procedures. .
  • Cardiac Rehabilitation Services: This three-phase program provides patients with a multi-disciplinary approach to cardiac conditioning and comprehensive education. .
