Treatment & Care

When a cancer is diagnosed, your physician will discuss various treatment options specific to your disease and medical condition. Typically, treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy and hormonal therapy.

At the WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center, our board certified medical oncologists and radiation oncologists will work with you to help you understand your prescribed treatments. Our staff can help answer your questions about the treatment process, potential side effects and outcomes.

Our focus is to deliver comprehensive cancer services to our patients and their families in a timely, sensitive, coordinated, thorough, and professional manner.

Medical Oncology

Medical Oncology services are available on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Outpatient medical oncology care is provided at the WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center by physicians who are board certified in medical oncology, hematology, and internal medicine, as well as by oncology trained and certified nurses.

Being sensitive to patient privacy, the WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center offers private rooms for physicians to complete patient examinations. In addition to the physical exam, the physicians educate each patient about their disease, treatment options, and appropriate follow-up.

The licensed laboratory in the WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center allows routine blood tests to be processed on the premises. This reduces patient waiting time prior to treatment. Additional tests are performed at the WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital laboratory and other reference laboratories, with timely results to requesting physicians.

Chemotherapy and additional treatments are administered in a large, bright infusion area in the comfort of seventeen recliners equipped with privacy curtains and room for family and friends to be with loved ones. There is also the option of two private treatment rooms with beds. In addition to medical care, the nurses also provide assessment, education and ongoing emotional support to patients and their families.

The physicians and nurses consult with ancillary support services including nutrition, social, pastoral, rehabilitation, psychiatry, homecare and hospice services, as needed. Referrals are also made to community agencies for additional support services. This ensures a comprehensive plan of care with a commitment to compassionate, and excellence in clinical care, yielding high levels of patient satisfaction.

There is also a defined inpatient area for oncology admissions at the hospital. If chemotherapy is needed during an inpatient admission, a chemo-certified IV therapist will administer care.

Radiation Oncology

Radiation oncology is provided by Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), which accurately places the daily radiation treatment and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), which customizes the dose distribution for each treatment field. This allows the dose to be minimized in critical structures and maximized in the tumor volume. All these advances mean more precise radiation treatments that are safer for the patient and yield fewer side effects.

In addition, the WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center offers eBx™ electronic brachytherapy for early stage breast cancer, endometrial and skin cancers. A miniaturized x-ray source delivers localized and targeted radiation treatment in virtually any clinical setting under the supervision of a radiation oncologist.

Use of the eBx™ System provides the potential to reduce the time required for radiation therapy for early stage breast cancer from seven weeks (for external radiation therapy) down to five days. This allows the patient more treatment choices after breast sparing lumpectomy surgery.  For more information about Xoft® Axxent® eBx™  System, visit

Before treatment begins, the board certified radiation oncologist and physicists devise a customized treatment plan for each patient that will optimize the effect of the radiation to the tumor site. The staff is prepared to answer any questions patients may have about the entire radiation treatment experience.
