WellSpan York Hospital reaccredited as a Level I trauma center

August 28, 2017

WellSpan York Hospital’s Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center remains the only accredited Level 1 trauma center in Adams, Franklin, York, Lancaster and Lebanon counties

WellSpan York Hospital's Trauma Center has been reaccredited as a Level 1 trauma center – the highest accreditation possible – by the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation.

To attain the Level 1 accreditation, hospitals must provide multidisciplinary treatment and specialized resources for trauma patients, trauma research, a surgical residency program and an annual volume of 600 major trauma patients per year.

Last year, WellSpan York Hospital’s Regional Resource Trauma Center treated about 2,200 trauma patients. So far this year, it has seen more than 1,500.

WellSpan York Hospital’s Trauma Center treats patients with serious or critical bodily injury following incidents ranging from vehicle accidents and violent crimes to serious falls, which are the No. 1 cause of trauma admissions.

The hospital’s reaccreditation underscores a commitment to providing excellent care to patients when they need it most, says Keith Noll, senior vice president, WellSpan Health and president, WellSpan York Hospital.

“We are proud to serve as a regional health care resource for southcentral Pennsylvania,” said Noll. “This reaccreditation reinforces our commitment to ensuring advanced life-saving care to our family, friends and neighbors 24/7 in a state-of-the-art facility close to home.”

In addition, WellSpan York Hospital’s trauma center provides programs on substance abuse prevention and community outreach, including its “Matter of Balance” initiative for York County residents 65 years and older. The national program, in collaboration with Falls Free Coalition of York County, aims to decrease the number of falls across York County.

The trauma center is part of a robust hospital emergency department, which completed a $50 million renovation this spring. The project included construction of a larger, state-of-the-art helipad, allowing for larger helicopters with more patient capacity to transport patients for lifesaving treatment.

WellSpan York Hospital has been designated a regional trauma center since 1986, with its first Level 1 accreditation in 2009.
