$1.6 million expansion makes hospital’s NICU largest in southcentral Pa.

WellSpan York Hospital today opened its expanded Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), enabling WellSpan neonatologists and nurses to care for more York-area newborns in a state-of-the-art, calm and caring environment.

The expanded and renovated space increases York County’s only Level 3 NICU by six beds. The hospital’s NICU now has a total of 44 beds – more than any other hospital in southcentral Pennsylvania.

“We are thrilled to expand our Level 3 NICU to help meet the growing need for exceptional neonatal specialty care here in York County,” said Keith Noll, senior vice president, WellSpan Health and president, WellSpan York Hospital. “The opening of this expanded unit signifies our ongoing commitment to providing outstanding specialty care to our tiniest patients in the communities we serve.”

A Level 3 NICU offers round-the-clock, comprehensive specialty care for very small or very sick babies. Hospitals with Level 3 NICUs can care for newborn infants with extreme prematurity or who are critically ill or require surgical intervention, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

WellSpan York Hospital’s $1.6 million NICU expansion features new, state-of-the-art equipment for more advanced medical and surgical care. It also offers a more private, comfortable setting – including noise-reducing floors – to foster a calmer and quieter care environment for patients and their families.

The NICU is staffed 24/7 with specially trained nurses and neonatologists, who treat approximately 450 children a year in the unit. These newborn patients are treated for various, sometimes life-threatening, conditions – including low birth weight, respiratory problems, infections, prematurity and problems experienced during the birth process.

More than 3,000 babies are delivered at WellSpan York Hospital every year.
